What Is Love ?

We couldn't say it any better than Jeremy Taylor -
"Love is friendship set on fire".

But love is far more than simply being "In Love", and, for many, doesn't start to take hold and grow until lust begins to diminish and subside. Love is an emotion and the funny thing about emotions is they are uniquely different in us all. With this in mind, we have endeavored, with the help of many wise people through history, to answer "What is love?"

 beating heat

St. Augustine in circa 400AD explained love beautifully -
"Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion.
"

"That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two."

Or, as St. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13:5-7 -
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."

Or as Paramahansa Yogananda simply states -
"To describe love is very difficult, for the same reason that words cannot fully describe the flavor of an orange. You have to taste the fruit to know its flavor. So with love."

What Is Love ?

What is love to the lonely?

Psychology portrays love as a cognitive phenomenon with a social cause. It is said to have three components:

  1. Intimacy
  2. Commitment
  3. Passion
An ancient proverb once defined love as "a high form of tolerance". And this view has been widely accepted by scholars and philosophers alike. We like to think of love as more of a journey to the unknown where you put your trust in one person and follow.

Love is the ability to care for someone deeply, no matter how much they hurt you or how badly they broke your heart.

Love never considers revenge, only forgiveness, understanding and compassion. That is not to say that love is blind enough to let it happen again, only to say that hate should never follow love.

What is love but a beating heat

What is love? For centuries poets and philosophers have been trying to answer that very question with clarity. For some, their eyes are opened by love, but others are blinded and therein lies the problem.

How you define love may not be how I define it. In the end, no matter how you define it, see it, feel it or express it, love is now, and will always be, the eternal truth of mankind.

Love is patient, love is kind, doesn't poison babies wine. It it neither envious or jealous, boastful of proud. It seeks the higher ground and pours compassion down on us all. Love protects us and fills us with hope and joy. It preserves our youthfulness and gives us dreams.

Love comes in many shades and colors. There is the love that two partners share, the love between a mother and her children and the love you feel for your closest friend. You can't deny, these are all valid and binding forms of love that are all different in character, expression and meaning.

Love is a gift that should never be kept, but shared. Love is an exhilarating feeling that should be experience not only by the heart, but by the mind and the soul.

The depth of love can not be measured. Look at the relationship between a mother and a child. The mother loves the child unconditionally and it can not be measured at all.

Romantic love is a deep, intense feeling that wells up inside of you causing you to want to shout it out to the world. You find yourself telling everyone you see about this new love you have found, as if it is a new discovery for mankind. Romantic love is heavily tied to sexual attraction, animal magnetism and LUST.

In the past philosophers have fill countless volumes with their pondering's and speculation relating to the strange phenomenon we call love. But love has always ruled, in music, poetry, paintings, sculptor and literature.

"Love seeks no cause beyond itself and no fruit; it is its own fruit, its own enjoyment. I love because I love; I love in order that I may love" - St. Bernard 1090-1153

"Eventually you will come to understand that love heals everything, and love is all there is" - Gary Zukav
